Ciao Dan & Karen!
We just moved to Windsor, in beautiful Sonoma County, California.
About 30 years ago we did a houseboat trip on the Sacramento River delta with a small group of friends. Every night we drank wine, ate great food, and sat under the summer stars. Since then we've found that good wine, good food, and good friends make many memorable times.
Favorite wine-travel destination:
Volcano Winery on the big island of Hawaii. The reds aren't quite as big and bold as we enjoy here in the Dry Creek Valley but the whites are quite nice with the hint of guava. Or maybe it's because we just like being in Hawaii.
Passions outside of wine:
Karen is an accomplished musician: she plays handbells with Bay Bells, is learning ukulele, has co-written a full-length musical, and is the choir director at Windsor Presbyterian Church. Dan has been a part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training for several years as a participant and a coach raising over $85,000 for cancer research.
Favorite bicycle route in Sonoma County:
The Vineman triathlon route. Dan has participated in the Vineman many times and finds the bike route of the triathlon to be absolutely stunning—rolling hills, beautiful vineyards and incredible views. The Vineman route goes through the Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley, and Alexander Valley—three vastly different (but high quality) wine-growing regions. It starts in Guerneville and goes east on River Road to Westside Road. Then up Dry Creek Road and over Canyon Road then down Hwy 128 to Chalk Hill Road. The route winds its way over to Windsor River Road, and down Eastside Road—which can take you right back to Guerneville again.
Favorite wine book:
Home Winemaking for Dummies. Dan's first batch of syrah is currently underway in the garage. This book has been very helpful to this first-time home winemaker.
