June 2004
Bon Giorno!
Exciting news!! Montemaggiore just completed our inaugural bottling! The entire process of bottling 850 cases of 2002 Syrah was finished in about 6 hours, so that's about 25 bottles a minute. After nurturing the grapes for nine months and caring for the wine in barrels for another eighteen months, the wine came to its final resting spot so very quickly. Now the bottled wine receives rest and relaxation for about three months to get over "bottle shock" (the dulling of flavors after corking). Finally in September, the 2002 Syrah will be available first to our mailing list. To ensure your allocation, sign up for our mailing list now. We are really excited to share this inaugural wine with you!
In the vineyard, the "baby grapes" (as our son Paolo calls them) of the 2004 vintage are now clearly visible. They are about half the size of peas (or about the size of Paolo's pinky fingernail)! Our head-scratching issue is "To water or not to water?". We want to keep the vines healthy, but they have plenty of leaves right now, so we don't want to encourage too much vegetation by giving the plants too much water. We haven't started irrigating the vineyard, but we don't want to get caught with a heat wave where the vines shut down if they don't have enough. Hmm — we'll just have to continue tracking the weather forecast!
In each newsletter, we feature a member of our extended family as our Wine Lover of the Month. This month, we'd like you to meet Anne.
