The smooth texture and complex flavors of the 2005 Montemaggiore Syrah are due the natural, un-inoculated fermentation. This vintage is also the first to shed our old "fun" label, and instead have the new "elegant" label.

Vineyard Profile: Estate Vineyard
Located on a mountainside high above Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma County, the rocky soils of Montemaggiore's estate vineyards produce intensely flavored grapes at naturally low yields. Using biodynamic practices and organic materials, we farm Paolo's Vineyard without chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides.

2005 Vintage
The 2005 growing season was long and somewhat difficult due to a wet spring, followed by a cool summer, and a very late harvest. All our Syrah grapes became ripe virtually simultaneously, whereas typically we harvest the highest elevation grapes three weeks before those from the lowest elevation. The longer time spent on the vine, however, resulted in grapes with well-developed and complex flavors.

Winemaker's Goal
The Paolo's Vineyard Syrah is Montemaggiore's flagship wine, thus the ultimate expression of our estate mountainside vineyards.  Typically 100% Syrah, this wine has rich and intense flavors balancing black fruit with spicy, earthy, savory notes.

Tasting Notes
The aroma of the 2005 Paolo’s Vineyard Syrah exudes black cherry and pepper, underpinned by hints of blueberry, leather, and spices. The tannins are firm and supple, the texture silky, while the finish is long and lingering.
Winemaking Notes
Hand-harvested in mid-October for optimum tannin ripeness, the grapes traveled less than 100 yards to our estate winery. There they were destemmed but not crushed, carefully hand sorted at the berry level, and held in stainless steel for a four-day cold soak. Two-thirds of the grapes were inoculated with Syrah yeast to emphasize their fruit, while the remainder were un-inoculated to maximize a smooth mouthfeel. The whole berry fermentation in open-top tanks with punchdowns for cap management brought out the wine’s complexity on the palate. After a gentle pressing in a stainless steel basket press in order to limit astringency, the wine aged for 20 months in primarily French oak barrels. Unfined and unfiltered.

Food Pairings
Being medium to full-bodied, Montemaggiore Syrah goes well with foods that are likewise.  The earthy flavors in mushrooms, the smokey flavors in grilled meats, the slightly gamey flavors in lamb echo the aromas in the Paolo's Vineyard Syrah.

This wine pairs well with marinated tri-tip, lamb kebabs, pasta bolognese, grilled portobellos, pork tenderloin, bacon rösti, and sheep's milk cheeses.

Consider our recipes for wild mushroom and brie crostini, salsa di parmigianochipotle sweet potato gratin, salmon grilled on a cedar plank, bucatini amatriciana, and lamb burgers.

Accolades

International Wine Review
June 2008

“This small boutique winery owned and operated by Vince and Lise Ciolino produces well-crafted Syrah. Their 2005 vintage Syrah displays a lovely opaque ruby color and offers scents of fresh dark red fruit with notes of ashes, cedar and cocoa dusting. On the palate it displays ripe concentrated spicy red and black fruit flavors with a soft and elegant attack, round tannins and a velvety soft finish."
