Vineyard Profile: Estate Vineyard
Located on a mountainside high above Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma County, the rocky soils of Montemaggiore's estate vineyards produce intensely flavored grapes at naturally low yields. Using biodynamic practices and organic materials, we farm Paolo's Vineyard without chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides.

2011 Vintage
Although California's north coast has an ideal climate for growing grapes, the weather in 2011 created many challenges.  Spring was wet and cold, including rain during the crucial pollination phase, followed by a cool summer with temperatures 10-15°F below normal. With a smaller crop, ripening sped up with warmer temperatures in August and September, but then the rain arrived early in October.  At Montemaggiore, we harvested in smaller lots than usual, offering the vines every opportunity for ripeness before significant rain damage set in. 

Winemaker's Goal
The Montemaggiore Rosé is an intentional rosé, whose grapes are grown and harvested specifically for the purpose.  This wine has fresh, fruit aromas along with a crisp body and round mouthfeel.  With its multiple layers of flavors, it's quite an elegant wine. More on Rosé Winemaking

Tasting Notes
The vibrant and intense ruby color of the Montemaggiore Rosé hints at its gorgeous strawberry and raspberry flavors highlighted by floral notes. Made in the classic dry style of a Provençal Rosé, this wine's fruit flavors are balanced by a vibrant acidity. Medium-bodied and round on the palate, the Montemaggiore Rosé carries enough weight and complexity to please the most discerning aficionados.
Winemaking Notes
Select Syrah bunches were hand-harvested in late October and brought less than 100 yards to our estate winery. There they were destemmed, carefully hand-sorted at the berry level, crushed, and held for 24 hours on their skins to obtain the flavor complexity and vibrant ruby color. After pressing, the juice was inoculated with yeast from Bandol (Provence, France) to emphasize mouthfeel. The three-week fermentation took place in neutral oak barrels at 60°F. The wine aged for a total of six months in French oak barrels. Filtered.

Food Pairings
Endlessly versatile and classically refreshing, this sophisticated rosé is an excellent match for a summertime al fresco meal. Serve slightly chilled.

Pairs well with barbequed shrimp, gazpacho, pasta al pesto, a simple baguette with prosciutto, tuna carpaccio, sautéed scallops, roast turkey, and avocado soup.
