This Syrah-Viognier blend marries the depth and complexity of Syrah with a light touch of aromatic Viognier. The inspiration for Syrafina comes from the Côte Rôtie region in France, where this blend is quite popular.
2013 was an outstanding vintage for Montemaggiore! A picture-perfect, long growing season resulted in wines with balance, grace, and wonderful texture.

Vineyard Profile: Estate Vineyard
Located on a mountainside high above Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma County, the rocky soils of Montemaggiore's estate vineyards produce intensely flavored grapes at naturally low yields. Using biodynamic practices and organic materials, we farm Paolo's Vineyard without chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides.
An outstanding vintage for Montemaggiore wines! The vines broke their winter dormancy early with a dry spring, which was followed by moderate summer temperatures, and a relatively dry harvest. The long growing season resulted in grapes with balanced acidity, ripe tannins, and reasonable sugar levels—all leading to a classic vintage. 2013 was so high quality that Montemaggiore produced a Reserve wine, which had only happened twice in the prior ten years.
Syrafina's nuances arise from co-fermenting a bit of viognier with our favorite varietal, syrah. The viognier adds floral and citrus notes to the aromas, while simultaneously softening the power of the syrah on the palate. The inspiration for Syrafina comes from the Côte Rôtie region in France, where this blend is quite popular. More on Syrafina Winemaking ▶
Syrafina pairs well with grilled salmon, roast leg of lamb with rosemary, seafood cioppino, roast duck, grilled portobellos, pork tenderloin, and sheep's milk cheeses.
"An estate-grown wine, this combines 95% Syrah with 5% Viognier, co-fermented into a floral mix of violet and lavender that’s captivating on the nose. Ripe red fruit surrounds a generous tannic structure that suggests aging, though the wine now remains soft on the palate. Drink now through 2021. Cellar Selection. —V.B."
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
“With elegant, medium to full-bodied texture, excellent purity and depth reminiscent of a fine St.-Joseph from France’s Northern Rhône, the 2013 Syrah Syrafina is a blend of 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier – the magic formula for Côte Rôtie in the Rhône. This wine has a dense ruby/purple color, a beautiful exotic nose of lychee, violets, crème de cassis and black raspberries. Rich, and well-endowed with moderate tannin, the wine is still youthful and unevolved, but shows plenty of promise and upside. Give it another 1-2 years of bottle age and drink it over the following decade.”
“I think both [the 2013 Syrafina and 2013 Reserve] will merit slightly higher scores after another 2-4 years of bottle age. They are impressively crafted and pure but still closed, structured and locked-in.”
San Francisco Chronicle Competition
America's largest wine competition bestowed the 2013 Montemaggiore Syrafina with a Double Gold medal for all Syrahs over $41. A Double Gold medal means that all judges believe the wine deserves a gold medal.
