Nobile is Montemaggiore's own special blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from our estate vineyards. Every year the exact blend varies slightly—52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48% Syrah in 2016—but the synergy between these two varietals always produces an elegant, age-worthy wine. 2016 also happens to be the last vintage of Nobile from our estate vineyards.

Vineyard Profile: Estate Vineyard
Located on a mountainside high above Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma County, the rocky soils of Montemaggiore's estate vineyards produce intensely flavored grapes at naturally low yields. Using biodynamic practices and organic materials, we farm Paolo's Vineyard without chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides.

2016 Vintage
With excellent quality and moderate yields, 2016 is the final vintage of Montemaggiore estate wines. The growing season started auspiciously with the first normal rainfall after four years of drought. Due to prior drought stress, the grapevines bore smaller berries and a slightly lighter crop than usual. Pollination was thankfully very even. The summer ripening season enjoyed slightly cooler than average daytime highs—perfect for deeply colored, complex wines. Mid-September brought some unseasonably cool temperatures which slowed down and spread out the harvest, a bonus for every winemaker. All our 2016 wines have great depth of flavor—a wonderful farewell vintage!

Winemaker's Goal
With the Nobile blend, Cabernet's strengths (structure, ageability, and depth) are combined with syrah's strengths (breadth of flavors, soft tannins)—thereby yielding a wine that's appealing fruit aromas, easy to drink young or aged, and a lot of complexity to keep you sipping! Tasting Notes
The 2016 Nobile features enticing aromas of black cherry and cocoa along with hints of espresso, cedar box, and dried herbs. On the palate, its structure is classic mouth-filling Cabernet, balancing power and elegance, with a smooth and luscious finish.
Winemaking Notes
The Cabernet and Syrah were hand-harvested, and each was fermented separately to accentuate its strengths: the structured complexity of the Cabernet and spicy berry flavors of the Syrah. One lot of Cabernet and one of Syrah underwent short cold soaks with a fermentation periods ranging from 14-21 days. After a gentle pressing in a stainless steel basket press in order to limit astringency, the wine aged in French oak barrels, slightly less than half of which were new. The wine was blended in July 2017, and bottled in spring of the following year after barrel aging for 19 months.

Food Pairings
Being a balanced blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, this wine goes well with the dishes that traditionally go well with each varietal.

Nobile pairs well with a grilled steak, braised short ribs, grilled sausage, roasted squash, braised lamb shanks, and polenta with grilled portobellos.

Consider our recipe for osso buco.
